Alameda Central a public park located in Mexico City is among one of the few places visited by the residents of the city. It was created by Viceroy Luis de Velasco in the 16th century for beautifying the city as well for providing recreation for its populace. The park derives its name from the many Alamo trees which were planted then. However the Alamo trees were replaced by Willow and Ash trees later on when it was realized that they grow faster as compared to the Alamos.

Today, this green shady park with sparkling fountains and sculptures like Despoire and Malgre Tout provide respite to many from the usual commotion prevalent in the city. There is also a monument here dedicated to Beethoven to commemorate the completion of the ninth symphony.

Alameda Park with food stalls; markets and live music being played in the background make your weekends enjoyable and relaxing. You will find food vendors selling a variety of snacks like grilled corn cobs and ice-cream. Just sitting under a shaded bench for sometime before heading towards the museums provides you the much needed rest after a stroll.

Mornings are the best times to catch the glimpse of Mexican birds. Of the great variety of trees present here the Jacarandas which give out lavender flowers from February to March are the most spectacular of all trees. The short metal fences erected to keep people away from the grass are ineffective.

Alameda central, the only sizeable park of Mexico City has some very interesting museums and monuments surrounding it. It has undergone massive renovation work after the 1985 earthquake.

What makes the place very popular is its wide entrance, Mexican folk and dance concerts and easy accessibility. Although it is often thronged by many visitors it is calm and a peaceful place to relax and spend a day.
