If you are an individual that can appreciate fine craftsmanship depicted in architecture than a visit to the Catedral Metropolitana is the place you must see while in Mexico City. It is easily found at the north end of the Zocalo area. It is believed that this is the oldest building to be in existence in Latin America. The original foundation has been traced back to the 16th century. Those that are not into architecture that much many recognize this as being the place where the famous Argentinean Liberator, General Jose de San Martin was put as his final place of rest.
The magnificence of the Catedral Metropolitana is almost impossible to put into words. Although there was nothing about this place that I did not enjoy I would have to say the most intriguing aspect for me was the two bell towers housing a total of 25 bells. There are a total of 16 distinct chapels and the public can visit 14 of these. When you are planning your visit here make sure you include lots of time to visit as many of the chapels as you can as they all hold their own history and quality.
You might find it intriguing to know that underneath this magnificent structure is a crypt that holds the bodies of many of the archbishops that have passed away.
The cathedral has not been free of trials and tribulations throughout the years with one of the most devastating being a fire that broke out in 1962 causing destruction to much of the interior of the cathdral.
This is one of those locations that you are going to want to relate to your friends when you return back home. There is no doubt that the history and beauty of the Catedral Metropolitana will leave a lasting impression on you.
