Like many other nations, Christmas is also one of the most important festivals of the whole year to the Mexican people. When Christmas is coming, Christmas songs will echo throughout the homes and streets. All of the malls and super markets are full of people busy with purchasing Christmas gifts and things. The main streets tend to be lined with red Christmas flowers to the point where it looks like a sea of red.
Mexico City although a lively city at any time of the year seems to reach its peak of excitement during the Christmas season. Like many other countries it is the season to spend money, visit relatives and attend family reunion.
Christmas Eve is the day for families to gather together whether poor or rich.. A wonderful meal is enjoyed together and many festivities take place throughout the night. There is the singing of carols and dancing. It is a most exciting night for the children filled with sweets and delicacies that only arrive but once a year.
Christmas Eve is considered the most important time of the Christmas season in Mexico City. It would seem that there would not be a street to be found here where there was not a party in full swing on Christmas Eve. The religious aspect of Christmas is not put by the way side for the Mexican people although there is so much festivity taking place. Church attendance is very high and is considered a very important part of the entire Christmas event.
Although I have been fortunate to spend Christmas in many wonderful locations throughout the years I would have to say that Mexico City tops my list for being able to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. They certainly know the meaning of "good will to all men". No matter what your nationality or background all are welcome to Mexico City for Christmas.
