The Day of the Dead

A Most Lively Event

On November 2nd of each year Mexico City celebrates The Day of the Dead. Now it may seem a little strange that one would celebrate death and no this is not some morbid culture. In fact it depicts the concept of how the Mexican people hold true the memories of those who have passed away.  It is sort of a combination of beliefs between Christian beliefs and pre Hispanic concepts. I first thought that this was going to be a festival of mourning and was not relishing the thought of attending such a festival if it could be called that. I was most pleasantly surprised when I discovered that this festival was one of the most active and exciting events that I had attended in Mexico.

It is to pay homage to those who died and also it is a very important festival to them. It has some likeness to the traditional Halloween. Almost everyone knows that the Mexican people have a happy nature and this is certainly evident in their attitude toward death. This day is full of happiness and joy instead of sadness, especially to the children. People festively singing and dancing to celebrate this day in memory of their dead relatives.  It is their way of celebrating the life of the loved one while they were alive.

They will light their pumpkin lanterns in front of their doors at night to lead the way for the deceased. They also provide a variety of offerings to the dead and this is influenced by the ancient Indian custom. Then the people are encouraged to build a variety of altars. All of these altars are beautiful and artistic and much thought and work goes into them. These are just a few of the customary activities that take place here in Mexico City during the Day of the Dead festival.
