Metropolitan Cathedral situated on the Zocalo square in Mexico City is the largest cathedral in the whole of Latin America. This majestic monument is among the exemplary Christian temples present. The exterior of this 16th century monument is admired for its architectural style. Its interior has four similar looking domes which are held by lines of columns. The 14 chapels and 5 naves have been designed in churriguereseque style and the cathedral like in other Mexican churches contains altarpieces, innumerable paintings and colored statues.
The Cathedral also contains many precious art works in various artistic styles belonging to the colonial period. The Altar Del Perdon, Jeronimo de Balbas, Altar de los Reyes, the tomb of Augustin Iturbide and paintings by well-known artist are some of the outstanding features found here. The stupendous choir constructed in baroque style in the interiors of the cathedral needs to be specially mentioned. The exterior and the interior of the Cathedral are both equally impressive.
Like in the case of other churches, Metropolitan Cathedral too has catacombs beneath it. You will find crystals, herbs and gemstones which are supposed to cure and protect afflictions with its extraordinary properties being sold in front of the cathedral.
The decoration and construction of this cathedral took nearly 3 centuries to complete therefore the architecture of this cathedral is a mixture of various styles.
Occasionally when light and sound show is hosted here the guest are treated with a candlelight tour around the cathedral. The cathedral tends to remain open on weekdays but remains closed during major holidays.
This ancient structure like the other buildings of Mexico City due to various factors like soft clay, weight of the cathedral and uneven foundations is gradually sinking to the ground. However the restoration work that began in 1990’s helped stabilize and restore the original splendor of the monument.
