Ajusco which is a frequently climbed peak of Mexico is a 52 million years old dormant volcano. Mexicans as well as tourists flock to this place on weekends and holidays to rejuvenate themselves. As you begin to climb its slope you will come across people of all age groups taking a stroll. The air here is considerably clean and therefore described as the “lungs of the valley”.
The mountain range of Ajusco which occupies 1/3rd of the federal area is the largest expanse found around Mexico City.
Here you will come across numerous trails which crisscrossing the park, yet the summit is not very difficult to find and does not appear confusing. Just keep walking up through the thick forest of pine trees. Any trail that you follow will take you to the closest ridge and this will take you to the summit. The tallest peak of this park feels very isolated and quiet.
It is best to climb Ajusco on a sunny and clear day as you will be able to catch a glimpse of the surrounding countryside easily on such days. The park is home to a plethora of plants and animals like wild roses, maguey, rabbits and rare owls. Its slopes are adorned with pine and oak trees and its summit is considered a sacred place by the Aztec’s.
To reach Ajusco you may either take a cab from the hotel or get into a metro to reach Universidad stop. Enter one of the buses waiting outside and then eventually take a cab to reach the trailhead.
November to March are dry seasons here and the best months to climb the peak. However as it takes just half a day to climb the summit you can try climbing the peak all the year under azure skies and tranquil weather conditions.
