Naturally, a visit to Mexico City would not be complete without spending a day shopping at the Zocalo. Its previous name was Main Square or Arms Square to which it is still referred to by the elderly in Mexico. Its formal name now though is Constitution Square. There is most likely everything you could possibly want to find on a shopping excursion. It boasts of such a combination of beautiful shops to street vendors. Then there is the modern atmosphere intermingled with that of history. Here you will see the flag of Mexico proudly flying. Don't expect to see a small area of quaint shopping for the square is one of the largest in the world. With great pride, you will see the raising or lowering of the flag carried out with much ceremony.
Originally, plans were undertaken to build a monumental column, however all that was completed with the base. In main other parts of Mexico you may hear their shopping plazas referred to as zocalo as well.
The Zocalo has a wonderful history. It is the main stage for Mexican ceremonies as well as military parades and the swearing in of officials. In addition to this many religious events, ceremonies and festivals are held here.
Being as there is so much history to relive here at the Zocalo Plaza just by visiting here it is not something that should be by passed when vacationing in Mexico City. Besides, you will want some great souvenirs to take home with you and this is the place to get them. You will find that there is a variety of shops here with some great products. I personally really enjoyed talking and buying wonderful items from the street vendors. I found them very friendly and having a strong desire to please. There is no doubt that they all had some beautiful items to offer.
